Engawa Garden Cottage ver 2.0

Inspired by the traditional Japanese architectural feature, the engawa serves as a serene transitional space between the interior and the surrounding garden. This addition includes a primary suite, an office, and a laundry nook, providing essential spaces for a growing family. When the sliding patio doors are open, the garden seamlessly extends into the living area, creating a harmonious indoor-outdoor connection. The engawa offers the perfect spot to relax, take in the changing seasons, or enjoy watching children play in the backyard.

Bellevue, Washington, under construction

Inspired by the traditional Japanese architectural element, the engawa functions as a calm transitional space between the interior and the garden. This 800 SF attached backyard cottage is designed to support a growing family and includes a primary suite, a family room, and a compact laundry nook. Throughout the home, Japanese-inspired elements are thoughtfully integrated, including an engawa (a garden-facing veranda), a genkan (an entry with a raised platform), and an ofuro (separate tub and shower)—features many Japanese families miss while living in the U.S., or elsewhere abroad.

When the sliding patio doors are open, the garden flows seamlessly into the living area, strengthening the connection between indoors and out. The engawa becomes an ideal place to pause, observe the changing seasons, or enjoy watching children play in the backyard.
